A look back at the 6th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6): tackling the triple global crisis of climate, biodiversity and pollution
The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) took place from February 26 to March 1, 2024 at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya. UNEA-6 concluded with the adoption of 15 resolutions aimed at advancing collaborative action on the triple global crisis.
UNEA-6 was chaired by Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, on the theme “Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral action to combat climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution”. Based on sound science, political will and societal commitment, the Assembly enabled the world’s governments, civil society groups, the scientific community and the private sector to shape global environmental policy.
As the world’s foremost environmental decision-making body, UNEA aims to restore harmony between humanity and nature, improving the lives of the planet’s most vulnerable people.
Progress reports on the implementation of previous decisions heard by UNEA-6 included the link between animal welfare, the environment and sustainable development, and the environmental aspects of minerals and metals management.
A high-level segment and dialogues were also organized, with the theme “Can the global financial system really tackle climate change, nature loss and pollution?” among others.
A multi-stakeholder dialogue was held on “Inclusive multilateralism fit for timely and large-scale implementation on climate, biodiversity loss and pollution: the central role of major groups and stakeholders”.
