Organization for Biodiversity Certificates (OBC) launches survey on biodiversity certificate claims to drive corporate demand

Organization for Biodiversity Certificates

Organization for Biodiversity Certificates (OBC) brings together companies, NGOs, and scientific experts to establish a robust market for biodiversity certificates. The need to attract private funds for biodiversity restoration and conservation led to the creation of OBC almost two years ago. Ensuring that this funding meets the challenges and responds to local needs is the primary focus of OBC, its partners, and its members.

🎯 Objective :

-To ensure this powerful tool effectively contributes to the global conservation objectives set by the Kunming-hashtag Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

-The initiative seeks to identify claims that will incentivize companies to contribute to the 30×30 conservation target.

-Significantly increase private financing for biodiversity restoration and conservation projects worldwide.

💡How ? By designing and promoting a rigorous methodology and market framework for the creation of biodiversity certificates, based on the local impact assessment of actions on biodiversity.

Our goals :

🧪 Develop a methodology to assess biodiversity gains:

– Evaluate the impact of actions taken by companies to protect and restore biodiversity.

– Mobilize field experts in partnership with OBC member companies to define concrete actions beneficial to biodiversity in targeted ecosystems using evolving and precise checklists. Practices are ranked according to their effectiveness and impact, considering different local contexts (forested areas, agricultural zones, tropical areas, etc.).

– Biodiversity credits/certificates must be based on science to be considered reliable: it takes time. This is why we are notably collaborating with the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle for temperate forest and agricultural zones.

💹 Create a market framework for trading and using these certificates:

– In partnership with EY and renowned methodological consortiums, OBC is developing a financial market where biodiversity certificates can be traded. These certificates represent quantified biodiversity gains resulting from specific local actions. This approach includes field tests, which are essential to prove the added value of the certificates and strengthen market credibility.

– The validation of methodologies will also come from the field, which is why we are launching pilot territories all over the world. More details on these pilots will be revealed during COP16. Any company or organization wishing to join OBC is welcome. aDryada, Ardian, ATIBT , Biota, Bouygues Construction, EcoAct, EcoTree France, FRANSYLVA Fédération Forestiers Privés de France, FRONTERRA, Gold Standard, Fondation GoodPlanet, Icade, Kering, La Belle Forêt, Le Printemps des Terres, Noé, Pernod Ricard, Planète Urgence, Reforest’Action, ReGeneration
